Crafted With Intention
Every rug begins as raw wool, sorted by hand and washed in small batches before a single knot is tied. What follows takes months — sometimes years for the larger pieces.
Where It Starts
Our weavers work from villages where the craft has passed through four or five generations. The looms are the same ones their grandparents used. The dyes come from madder root, indigo and pomegranate rind, which is why no two batches match exactly.
The Knot
A single square inch can hold anywhere from 60 to 200 knots depending on the design. Tighter knotting means finer detail and a longer weave.
- Oushak — 80 to 120 knots per square inch
- Antique reproduction — 120 to 160
- Fine hand-knotted — 160 to 200
Finishing
Once off the loom the rug is washed, stretched and trimmed. The wash is what gives an antique-finish rug its softened palette — it's a controlled process, not age, though the effect is the same. Read more about our process.
